Natural cherry cabinets add warmth and richness. Soft-close slab door and drawer fronts in a matching vertical grain channel sleek midcentury style. “These cabinets are made in Vermont and are custom, so they’re a very high-quality product,” Mee says.
Solid natural cherry shelves lighten up the sink wall and allow colorful vintage dishware to pop against the white walls (Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore). “In the original design, they wanted the backsplash tile to go all the way to the ceiling,” Nolin says. “We actually liked it better with the open shelving and the tile stopping halfway. It’s much lighter with the tile stopping and the open shelving.”
A larger island gives the couple more seating, storage and a generous work surface via a polished quartz countertop with waterfall ends. The quartz, also used on the perimeter, features a solid white background with reflective flecks that pick up the varying green 2-by-6-inch porcelain backsplash tiles. The designers installed the tiles in a vertical stack pattern in keeping with midcentury style.
A pair of 10-inch pendant lights with an oil-rubbed bronze finish have cased white glass shades and clean lines. The ceiling has new dimmable LED recessed lights. A single round oil-rubbed bronze sconce with black metal frame over the window was also inspired by midcentury design.
