Graduating From Therapy — Therapy for Black Girls

Graduating From Therapy — Therapy for Black Girls

When a therapist decides to terminate with a client, it may bring up lots of feelings for the client around shame, embarrassment, and rejection. Online, you may have seen people referring to termination as being “fired” by their therapist. Let’s dig into this a little bit more and explore the reasons why a therapist might “fire” their client.

Returning to dig deeper into this with me are Dr. Donna Oriowo, an award-winning DEI advocate, international speaker and certified sex and relationship therapist in the Washington D.C. metro area and Dr. D’Andria Jackson, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Psychological Consultant, and mental health speaker. During our conversation, we discussed some of the reasons why a therapist might terminate with a client, strategies for dealing with feelings of rejection that may come up after a therapist terminates with you, and how to become comfortable with the idea of one day graduating from therapy.
